The massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) was launched in 2020, with the first build released in November 2021. The interoperable browser-based experience allows players to plug in an Ethereum wallet and use their NFT avatars from a large number of popular collections. The $10 million raised will expand the game’s development team, introduce new gameplay elements, create other NFT collections, and improve user experiences. The team plans to invest in marketing to attract new players and build a strong community around the game.
“We’ve been moving fast, and we’ve been shipping products,” Webb said. “But for us, it’s a case of wanting to move faster. We want to build faster, and we want to innovate faster.”
The game’s development team is focused on introducing new features to enhance the gaming experience. One of these new features is Blockbusterz, a player-vs-player (PvP) competitive mode that lets teams of five battle it out. This mode adds a “compete-to-mint” system that gives NFTs to players based on how well they do in competitive mode. One of the most exciting features of Worldwide Webb is the ability to pit NFT collections against each other. Players can create teams of their favorite NFT avatars and battle with other groups.
Further Developments Around Worldwide Webb
Worldwide Webb’s retro-style 2D graphics have garnered attention and helped it stand out in the crowded NFT market. The game’s nostalgic feel, reminiscent of the early 90s, has attracted players who grew up during that era. Supported avatars are turned into 2D pixel characters that players can control through the game’s world, explore different environments, and engage in the storyline.
Webb plans to draw inspiration from classic, time-absorbing games like RuneScape and Ultima Online to keep players hooked with richer gameplay and narrative. The $10 million raised will be used to attract veteran talent and grow the game into a “massive, sprawling universe.”
“What I was really hoping to do was to see a Metaverse game that people can go into, but they can bring these things in,” he said, “in a permissionless manner.”
The team is exploring ways to bring 3D elements into the game while maintaining its retro allure. Webb plans to create native iOS and Android apps if Apple and Google accommodate Web3 business models. With support for over a million NFT avatars, Worldwide Webb stands out in the NFT market and is poised for growth and innovation.
