The game of chess is entering the metaverse through Animoca Brands’ new partnership with Play Magnus Group (PMG). The industry giant will leverage its subsidiaries Lympo and The Sandbox to integrate the popular board game into web3 ongoings via multiple streams.

Inspired by the GOAT of chess, Magnus Carlsen, PMG is a well-established company within the chess industry, as its play and educational services are already enjoyed by millions of players and students. The new partnership will broaden the platform’s reach into the limitless realm of the metaverse, where lucrative monetization avenues will also be on the menu for elite players.

Lympo will play a key role in inaugurating PMG’s dive into the metaverse, as it’ll develop a unique NFT collection, a blockchain-inspired chess game, and social tokens to go alongside the upcoming Champions Chess Tour. The company will also create custom-designed, animated NFT collections depicting world-class chess players such as Carlsen himself, as well as Anish Giri and Hans Niemann.

The Sandbox enthusiasts are also advised to get their chess pieces in order, as the prominent platform will be the hosts of PMG’s upcoming virtual Champion Chess Tour.

Yat Siu, co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands has since commented on the multifaceted partnership: “Chess has emerged as one of the fastest-growing esports. By partnering with Play Magnus Group and its Champions Chess Tour, we will create unparalleled experiences for chess players, casual gamers, and fans”.
